About Australian GST

GST Calculator Australia — 10% ATO-Aligned

Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a broad-based tax of 10% on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. It was introduced on 1 July 2000, replacing the old wholesale sales tax. Unlike many countries, Australia has just one GST rate — 10% — making calculations simple. The ATO's official formula to extract GST from an inclusive price is to divide by 11.

FAQ

Australian GST Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add 10% GST in Australia?

How do I extract GST from a GST-inclusive price?

When do I need to register for GST in Australia?
You must register for GST if your annual GST turnover is A$75,000 or more. For non-profits, the threshold is A$150,000. Taxi and ride-share operators must register regardless of turnover.
Are groceries subject to GST in Australia?
Most basic food and groceries are GST-free. However, hot food, soft drinks, confectionery, biscuits, and some snack foods are taxable at 10%.
What is a BAS (Business Activity Statement)?
A BAS is a form lodged with the ATO to report and pay GST, PAYG withholding, and other tax obligations. Most businesses lodge quarterly; some lodge monthly.
Is this calculator aligned with the ATO?
Yes. We use the ATO's approved 1/11th rule to extract GST and the × 1.1 formula to add GST. For complex tax matters, consult a registered tax agent or BAS agent.
